Medical comorbidity associated with alcohol abuse and dependence. Documentary review

Abstract
Introduction: alcohol abuse and dependence are highly disabling disorders because they tend to chronicity and recurrence. Often they coexist with other medical conditions that contribute to overshadowing the prognosis of patients as they worsen the clinical course, making it difficult to treat and recover.
Objective: identify the comorbid alterations of medical nature that occur more frequently in people with alcohol abuse and dependence.
Method: a documentary review was made from the PubMed, LILACS and Gale Virtual Reference Library databases between June and November of 2017.
Results: from the search strategy, 24 articles were selected for review. The findings suggest that users who consume alcoholic beverages in excess are more likely to have comorbid medical conditions that affect the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, liver and cardiovascular system.
Discussion and conclusions: the frequency with which these conditions are present in alcohol users reveals a need for unmet attention and the occurrence of complications that in most cases are underestimated and insufficiently treated.
